Halifax-based law firm Stewart McKelvey has bought a stake in Seattle-based global software company TheFormTool LLC for an undisclosed sum.

Stewart McKelvey CEO Lydia Bugden, who declined to disclose the size of the stake, told the Chronicle Herald that the firm’s desire to adapt to a fast-changing legal market was the deal’s main driver. Clients were increasingly seeking “price certainty” and asking for clearer timelines for their cases, Bugden said.

Among other capabilities, TheFormTool’s document assembly systems would help the firm streamline some of its processes including accelerating document assembly by 70 per cent, she said.

Established in 2011, TheFormTool offers software for legal and business entities. The company hasclients of varying sizes in 40 countries.
